I have spent many years caring for people who are lost who become found again when a photo, song, or story is shared, re-visited, brought back to today’s moment. We laugh, we cry, we feel like ourselves again. Life is better with good stories to tell.

I’m a fan of “Lark Rise to Candleford,” a British series. Emma Timmins just took over the school house, and when she asked the students, “Why do we tell stories?” one answer arrived: to understand each other better. I take it a step further: I believe we tell stories to appreciate and value each other for the moments we’ve lived and celebrated and sung aloud, alone and together. It’s now my responsibility and privilege to tell another person’s stories so we may all live and celebrate and sing aloud again, every day, to be comforted and calmed in the storms that come over the mountains.

I am delighted to serve caregivers. You might be a spouse, a sister, a friend of someone living with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. You might be a professional caregiver in a care community, or attending someone in their own home. May my experiences support your own as you provide care, not only for the one with dementia, but for you yourself as well. I’ve learned to keep a song or story on my lips at all times; it fills the day with good things, builds trust and comfort, and allows daily tasks to fly by. As Mary Poppins sings, “Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down…” When there’s trust, there’s ease and joy that surrounds all sorts of tender and personal circumstances. I’ve seen the transformation from sadness to joy over and over, and I’d like to share the ability with you. I’d also love to hear your stories about how these ideas work for you.

As the Life Enrichment Liaison for Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL, we are very proud and lucky to include Tryn’s ’15 Minutes of Fame’ book into both our program volunteer training and check-out kits geared toward this often forgotten population. Tryn’s book is a light and beautiful collection of insight, tips and testimonies to empower caregivers who care for people with dementia. We felt it was a perfect fit for anyone to learn of basic yet clever ways to engage individuals with this disease.

    Hello,

I came across your profile on LinkedIn through a mutual connection with Barbara Bagan. I’m trying to get into art therapy and am fascinated by the possibilities of art for people with Alzheimers and dementia. I’m also interested in your work at the MIM. Maybe we can talk about art, spirituality and healing. I look forward to following your blog.
